TTG Featured Designer – Ryan Pimental of Boston Cream
Hello TTG readers! It’s time for the weekly feature, where we feature a new brand every week, and it could be one that you’ve never heard of. By bringing you a new feature every week, we are giving exposure to indie t-shirt brands and helping them get their product out into the public eye.
This week we’re featuring a brand called Boston Cream and it is owned and operated by Ryan Pimental. We are both from Boston, so I was pretty happy to have a chance to feature this brand. I had a chance to virtually sit down with Ryan (lol over email….) and find out a little more about Boston Cream. Here’s our interview:
What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Ryan Pimental and I am from the City of Boston.
How did Boston Cream come about?
I am from a small New England town with hardly 10,000 people. Four years ago I moved to the City of Boston for college and it opened my eyes to how big the world around us really is. I spent so countless hours designing and photographing the city that I figured it was finally time to do something with it, something in a different medium. I spent two years to the month researching, sampling and planning for the company. Finally this past spring the timing was right and everything fell into place, as we opened the doors on June 1st of this year.
Do you like Boston Cream Pie? Donuts?
Strangely enough, I am not a fan of either Boston Cream Pie or the donuts.
Do you do your own screenprinting?
I don’t do my own screenprinting, but a lot of the packaging for items like the belts, stickers and decals are all done in-house.
Do you have any help with Boston Cream or is it a one-man show?
Technically, it is a one man show. I do everything from sampling fabrics to designing anything you have ever seen associated with the company to working with the printers. But with that, my friends and family help me out in more ways than I can explain. Whether it is helping out at shows, handing out fliers or promoting the brand, helping fold, tag and bag a new products, or shipping out orders they are always willing to lend a hand. It’s an amazing feeling to know everyone around me backs me on this venture and it defiantly helps give me a push to move forward. They are tough critics and won’t tell me something looks good just because we are close, which is a really good thing.
What is your favorite season?
It’s pretty nice living in New England because we experience all four seasons better than anywhere in the world. As far as my favorite, it’s a tossup between spring and summer.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Coffee Chip.
What can we expect from Boston Cream this winter?
I don’t want to give away too much, but you can expect a more vintage feel and new clothing items other than just shirts.
What is your favorite Boston landmark?
Most people would expect me to say the Zakim Bridge because I am a civil engineering major, but it would have to be Fenway Park, hands down.
What is your favorite Boston Cream design?
One I haven’t designed yet. Each day I would like to think I’m becoming a better designer and it’s all about progression.
What do you think is the hardest thing about owning your own business?
The legal aspect of owning a business is all new to me, so I’m still learning something new everyday.
What is the one thing you love about owning your own business?
Seeing the final product and seeing everybody’s reaction is amazing, knowing the hard work paid off. It still feels surreal every single time I see people wearing something from Boston Cream.
Is the water REALLY dirty?
The Charles River is actually cleaner than you think. Although it’s only one step away from being acceptable drinking water, I would still never touch it.
What can people expect when ordering from Boston Cream? A slice of Boston?
Exactly. You can expect every single piece of your order to be proudly made in the United States of America and 100% sweatshop free, all with a slice of Boston. I don’t want to give anything else away, but place an order and I promise you won’t be let down.
Where else can people find you on the web besides your store?
You can follow our blog for anything and everything Boston and can catch us on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and FormSpring.
Do you see yourself ever opening a brick and mortar shop?
Every time we do a show, it feels like a mini-shop for a day or two and it is a ton of fun. So if the timing, location and everything in between was right, absolutely.
What can we expect to see from Boston Cream in 2011?
New designs, new products, even more attention to details and a completely new branding effort. I am working really hard to bring Boston Cream from a tee-shirt company to a complete well-rounded, mature brand.
